My Art;

Is it Art - I don’t know, I’m no expert. I’m a old tradie from Melbourne who came to work in the eastern suburbs of Sydney last year and out of convenience took residence in Woolloomooloo.

On weekends I look around the inner city of Sydney and I have been seduced and captivated by it’s beauty, it’s light, it’s water and it’s air.

Art?  I would rather say I paint my thoughts.

This may offend some people, because as we talk and joke and sometimes brag - we sometimes hide our thoughts.

But as I age,  I need to paint mine.

So judge my thoughts.

It's dangerous, as I’m fragile.

Damian Broomhead

I'm a self-taught artist living in Sydney, working mainly with oil pastels. I’ve always used drawing as my medium as I find there's an intensity and immediacy to it. I tend to create my drawings around a theme, usually some kind of narrative moment extracted from the past. In recent years I’ve worked on an expansive open ended series of 160 plus drawings focusing on the period of of first contact in Australia, along with Indigenous traveller Bennelong’s trip to London in 1793.

These drawings are a small selection from that series.

Colour is my dominant means of expression. Generally I choose a narrative moment, often extracted from a contemporaneous story or journal, and hold it up to the light, so to speak. I try and use colour to irradiate and charge the images with a certain kind of extra emotional energy that can often be hard to pin down otherwise. In that sense, colour always serves the expression in the picture. My pictures are to a large extent improvisations. I start with a central image and build the picture up around that. It’s story-making in a lyrical, intuitive kind of way. Maybe that’s where the importance of colour comes in. It’s such an effective means of creating atmosphere, perhaps a kind of inversion of traditional representation. My work is emphatically two dimensional and flat, and figurative, but the figures are usually simple and stripped down to basics. The tension created within the picture through colour and composition is paramount. Creating a visually compelling image is the overall intention.



Born 1963 in Rangoon Burma (Myanmar) his family escaped from the military Junta ruling in 1965. The youngest of seven siblings with an Anglo Burmese back ground. He completed one of the oldest trade “Coppersmithing” in 1983 and nominated for Apprentice of the year in Perth, Western Australia. In 1997 his love and passion for art was seeded during his 11 year career with the Art Gallery of NSW.

During his employment with the Art Gallery, he was privileged to have worked with prominent Australian and international artists.

His contemporary abstract sculptures embrace time; past, current and future. His passion for the environment and social justice underpins his concept whereby his sculptures create themselves and he is the tool, making them part of history.

He studied Welding & Sculpture at the National Art School and have exhibited in group exhibitions at The Shop Gallery Glebe and UNSW Shalom College Sydney. He was a finalist in the Artentwine Sculpture Biennial Tasmania 2018.
