The Mount Wilson Residency 2019
Leisl Mott is a landscape painter working primarily alla prima in oil. Her distinctive work is recognisable for spontaneous, painterly marks and an intuitive style that strives to capture the essence of place or a moment in time.
Leisl is the second artist to partake in a new artist in residence scholarship program created by the residents of Mount Wilson and based in the Old School House and Teachers Cottage in the village. Leisl’s scholarship was made possible by the generous support of the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre.
For four weeks in November, Leisl will be living and working in Mt Wilson, venturing into the diverse surrounding landscape for inspiration for new work and development of her practice. “I’m enjoying exploring the varied landscape of the Blue Mountains region, from the vastness of cliffs and canyons to the intimacy of the gardens and villages; this place offers a painter a lifetime of inspiration. Mount Wilson itself is such an incredibly special place and the landscape here is so completely different to what I’m familiar with”, she says.
“My goal is to create work that feels familiar to locals”, she explains.
A selection of the work from Leisl’s residency will culminate in an exhibition, ‘The Mount Wilson Residency 2019’ to be shown at Rex-Livingston Art + Objects in Katoomba from the 14th December 2019 to the 13th January 2020.
