“Hey ya Wolgan Valley”
This body of work has been developed over the last 10 months.
Moving from the Blue Mountains to the country town of Portland, I was constantly searching for a landscape I felt connected to. The Wolgan Valley is where I found it.
In a truly spectacular scenery of nature reclaiming a once industrialised shale and brick mine, the Wolgan Valley is a visual experience of rust and old brick engulfed by the vines weaving in and out as they re-cover the land they once ruled.
My process starts by working en plein air, developing colour and compositional studies, then working on a larger scale in my home studio. It’s imperative to me that the work still stays true to the sense and feeling of place. Painting the dwarfing ancient gums, the sweeping riverbanks and commanding ochre cliff faces, highlights my minute position in this ancient country.
Whenever spending time somewhere I start to build connections, stories and memories. Each time I visit the Wolgan Valley, my appreciation grows and I learn more of what this special place has to offer.
